Collect Blood

  1. Prepare Equipment:

    • Gather the necessary equipment, including a sterile needle, a collection tube, and other materials.
    • Wear disposable gloves to maintain aseptic conditions.
  2. Verify Patient Identity:

    • Confirm the patient's identity using at least two identifiers, such as their name and date of birth.
  3. Prepare the Patient:

    • Ensure the patient is comfortably seated or lying down.
    • Choose an appropriate vein for venipuncture, usually in the inner elbow or the back of the hand.
  4. Apply Tourniquet:

    • Use a tourniquet to make the veins more visible and easier to access. It is important not to leave the tourniquet on for an extended period.
  5. Clean the Site:

    • Disinfect the puncture site with an antiseptic solution to reduce the risk of infection.
  6. Perform Venipuncture:

    • Insert the sterile needle into the vein. The needle is attached to a collection tube.
    • Blood flows into the tube due to the vacuum created in the tube.
  7. Collect Blood:

    • Depending on the tests ordered, multiple tubes may be used to collect different amounts and types of blood.
    • After each tube is filled, release the tourniquet before moving on to the next one.
  8. Remove Needle and Apply Pressure:

    • Withdraw the needle gently and apply pressure with a sterile gauze or cotton ball to the puncture site.
    • Ask the patient to keep the arm straight and continue applying pressure to minimize bruising and bleeding.
  9. Secure the Sample:

    • Cap each blood collection tube securely to prevent leakage or contamination.
    • Label each tube with the patient's information.
  10. Dispose of Materials:

    • Safely dispose of used needles and other materials in accordance with medical waste disposal guidelines.
  11. Provide Aftercare:

    • Instruct the patient to continue applying pressure on the puncture site for a few minutes.
    • Offer a bandage to cover the site once bleeding has stopped.
